For the tenth straight game now, the Mets started off the scoring. This time it was all thanks to Jose Reyes who lead off the game by blasting the second pitch of the game, a fastball straight down the pipe, into the right field stands to make it 1-0.
The Yankees came right back in the bottom of the inning when Gardner lead off with a single and then was pushed to third when Swisher hit an emphatic single of his own. Pelfrey did a great job inducing the double play against Teixeira, but the run scored to make it 1-1.
In the top of the third, Jose Reyes did it again. After Blanco walked with one out, Hughes made the mistake of throwing another meatball and once again, Jose Reyes deposited it into right field to make it 3-1. Look up hot in the dictionary, you'll see Reyes' mug.
Unfortunately for the Mets, the Yankees came right back to tie it in the bottom half. Gardner lead off with another single. Two batters later Mark Teixeira hit a two run shot of his own to right to even it up at three.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Yankees got their first lead of the series behind yet another two-run home run, this time by Curtis Granderson. Before the homer by Granderson, Pelfrey walked Posada to lead off the inning, a big no no. That would be all the Yankees needed to seal the victory.
Mariano would come on to get the easy 1-2-3 save, striking out Ike and then getting Bay and Carter to ground out weakly.
Pelfrey just didn't have it today. He tried his best to fight through it and ended up going seven innings, but it just wasn't enough to get by today. You had to expect at some point, though, that the Yankees' offense was going to wake up. You also had to expect that at some point Pelfrey was gonna lose game number two. Tomorrow's a new day and a chance to start a new streak.
