What a night it was for Mets minor leagues teams last night, as they picked up wins in all three games they played. Not only did they win, they won with authority. Some notes:
Up in Buffalo, the Bisons were off, as was the rest of the International League. The Bisons will return to action tonight against the Indianapolis Indians at home. Game time is 7:05 PM with Pat Misch taking the mound for the Bisons.
Down in Richmond, Binghamton bounced back from last night's loss by laying the smack down on the Flying Squirrels, 11-2. Apparently the B-Mets felt fireworks night should have been last night and not tonight. The game saw every hitter in the lineup, including the pitcher, pick up a hit. Only two hitters, P Josh Stinson and 3B Eric Campbell, had less than two hits on the day. The B-Mets' five through eight hitters in the lineup all picked up two RBI and recent promotions Josh Satin and Sean Ratliff went a combined 6-11, with each picking up three hits on the day. Did I mention Josh Stinson pitched a gem? Seven innings, five hits, two walks, four strikeouts and only one earned run. In 21.2 innings (four starts) since being converted from a reliever, Stinson is now 2-0 with a 1.66 ERA.
Hopping on I-95 south, we take a cruise down to sunny St. Lucie, where the sun was certainly shining bright on the Mets. They put a hurtin' on Bradenton 6-0 to exact some revenge for their embarrassing loss the night before. The key in this one was definitely starting pitcher Robert Carson who went six innings, giving up only two hits, one walk, no runs, and striking out 7. The Mets' bullpen then finished the game off with three perfect innings. On the offensive side, the Mets saw big efforts from C Juan Torres (3-4 with a double and three RBI) and 1B Stefan Welch (3-4 with a double and two runs scored). Stefan continues to impress with the bat. Perhaps a promotion is in order?
Heading back up 95 north, we pull into Savannah once more. The Sand Gnats completed their three game sweep of the Rome Braves thanks to a record tying performance by Mark Cohoon. Ladies and gentleman, it's time to start remembering that name. Cohoon tied a Sally league record by posting his third consecutive complete game shutout. In that span (27 innings, obviously), Cohoon has allowed only ten hits, four walks, and struck out 22. The win pushed Cohoon's record to 7-1 and his ERA to an astounding 1.30 in 90.1 innings pitched this season. Ohhhhh boy. He was so good it almost makes you forget the Sand Gnats' offense scored 12 runs in the game. The MVP of the offensive side was definitely Pedro Zapata, who put up a rare (at any level, including majors) 5-5 night with four RBIs. Not to mention I love saying his last name. Zapataaaaaa. The Gnats also saw RF Cesar Puello and 1B Alex Gregory pick up two hits and three runs apiece. Also, 2B Michael Fisher and C Dock Doyle (oh boy) each had three RBI of their own to cap the 12-0 rout. Oh Savannah, "Still in peaceful dreams I see, the road leads back to you". Couldn't have said it better myself Mr. Ray Charles. Even if you were talking about Georgia in general.
