Notable Mets History

Though this probably will not end up becoming a regular column here at SmallBall, we will continue to bring you the particularly noteworthy "this day in Mets history" events. Today is rife with those events. Let's take a look.

Back in 1978, though he wasn't pitching for the Mets by that time, Tom Seaver tossed the first no hitter of his career for the Reds against the Cardinals. I still cringe when I hear that.

In 1989, Doc Gooden posted his 100th career win with a victory over the Expos, raising his career mark to 100-37. Shaking my head. Oh, what could have been, Doc.

Eight years later, the Mets' saw two significant events occur on the same day. One good, one bad.

The good: The Mets and Yankees would play the first ever non-exhibition game against each other. That would also be the game where Dave Mlicki tossed a complete game shutout to win it for the Mets, 6-0.

The bad: That was also the day Steve Phillips was promoted to GM. I'm just gonna choose to remember the good on this one.
