Yup, it's time for more on those historical Mets. Once again, today I bring you only one nugget, but it's an important one, otherwise we wouldn't be mentioning it.
On this day in 1989, the Mets traded Lenny Dykstra, Roger McDowell, and Tom Edens to the Phillies in exchange for Juan Samuel. Another one that makes me cringe. Dykstra would go on to make four All-Star appearances with the Phillies, finishing in the top ten in MVP voting twice (he was 2nd in the voting in '93). McDowell had less of an impact, though he did pitch to a 1.11 ERA and save 19 games for the Phillies in '89. Juan Samuel, on the hand, famously tanked it for the Mets, hitting .228 with a miserable .599 OPS. The Mets promptly traded him to the Dodgers in the offseason in exchange for two hot dogs, a can of Pepsi, and some Tums. Or Mike Marshall and Alejandro Pena. Whichever sounds better to you.
