One day after picking up three wins in three games, it was a mixed bag of results down on the farm last night. The rundown:
Up in Buffalo, the Bisons continued their turnaround from last year's awful showing with a win against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a score of 7-3. Johnathan Malo got the Bisons on the board with an RBI triple in the bottom of the second. He would then be driven in on pitcher Dylan Owen's RBI single in the next at bat. Fernando Martinez finally cooled off with an 0-3 day but did drive in a run with a sac fly in the fifth to tie the game at three, followed directly by a two out, two RBI triple by Lucas Duda to put the Bisons up for good. Josh Thole continued his resurgence, going 2-4 with a run scored to raise his average to .283 on the season.
Down in Richmond, in Josh Satin and Sean Ratliff's first game since being promoted, the B-Mets dropped one to the Flying Squirrels (really?) 5-2. It was in large part due to Mike Antonini's poor start, where he went 4.2, gave up five hits, three walks, and four earned runs. The previously mentioned Satin went 0-5 with two strikeouts. Our boy Nick Evans had himself a solid night, going 2-4 with a run scored, raising his average to .275. He's now slugging .514 with an .860 OPS, which begs the question, why is he still in Binghamton and not Buffalo?
Further down the road in St. Lucie, every Mets' starter except Richard Lucas picked up a hit on the day, but that didn't stop them from getting crushed by Bradenton, 10-1. The blame in this one goes mostly to Jeurys Familia, who in four innings, gave up seven baserunners and eight runs, though only five were earned. Nuff said. Hopefully tonight will be better for the St. Lucie Mets.
Hopping back on I-95 north, we head into Savannah, which is quickly becoming the farm team nearest and dearest to me. The Sand Gnats won another one, 3-1, thanks to, you guessed it, great pitching. James Fuller continued his absolutely stellar campaign by going 6.2 and allowing only four hits, a walk, an unearned run and striking out five. Sadly, he didn't get the win as Erik Turgeon allowed an inherited runner to score in relief of Fuller. By the way, Fuller's ERA is now down to 1.95 on the season in 78.1 innings (13 starts). On the offensive side, Jefry Marte continued his recent hot streak by hitting a triple in the bottom of the fourth to put the Gnats up 1-0. In the bottom of the seventh, after Rome tied it at 1, Michael Fisher hit the go ahead single for Savannah, followed by an insurance RBI on a single by Wilmer Flores. Juan Lagares had a 2-4 night of his own, now raising his average up to .300 on the season.
