Last night was yet another one of big losses by Mets minor league teams. Only two teams played yesterday, Buffalo and Binghmton, and they both lost by big deficits. Some highlights:
Up in Buffalo, the Bisons were run over by the Lehigh Valley IronPigs for the second time in a row, this time losing 10-1. Once again, it was poor starting pitching that cost the Bisons. Dillon Gee, who's had an otherwise solid season, went only four innings, allowed ten baserunners, and a gaudy eight runs (seven earned). Double ouch. What made that tougher to swallow was the fact that the opposing pitcher, Nelson Figueroa, managed six shutout innings. It wasn't all bad, though. Fernando Martinez continued his hitting blitz since returning from the DL, going 3-3 with a double and a run scored. Since returning from the DL, Martinez is 10-26 with four doubles, a home run and four runs scored. Outstanding. Keep it going Jesus. Oh yea, Josh Thole also went 2-4 in his second game back from injury.
Across the way in Binghamton, the AA Mets didn't fare much better, dropping their game 10-2. As mentioned in our post yesterday, Maine started for the B-Mets in his first rehab appearance. He pitched very well, going four innings while allowing only a hit, two walks, and striking out five. Maine reportedly topped out around 88 m.p.h. on his fastball. Very encouraging start, but I'm sure we'd all like to see a little more velocity than that. Brad Holt continued his forgettable season with yet another forgettable appearance. In an inning and a third, Holt was torched for four hits, three walks, and six earned runs. Someone should definitely keep Holt away from sharp objects for a little while. The only real contribution of significance came from Eric Campbell. Pretty much all of the offense came from Campbell as he went 3-4 with a double and a two-run home run to produce the B-Mets only runs of the night. More on Campbell and his fantastic season later.
St. Lucie was off yet again for their All-Star break. They'll be returning to action tonight at home against Bradenton in a 7:00 p.m. start.
Savannah also was out of action, though this was just a regular day off and not part of an All-Star break. They'll also return to action at home tonight, squaring off against the Rome Braves in a 7:05 p.m. start.
